Coming Back to You

“Coming Back to You” is a song I often come back to. It was originally written by the late great Leonard Cohen, and Martin Gore did a magnificent cover of the song. I used to think “you” in the song refers to a loved one, but now I tend to think it signifies God. Whichever it means, this ambiguity provides plenty of food for thought.

I also love that it is written from the perspective of a factory worker and how the protagonist retains his sense of defiance against sufferings and in moments of weakness. Unlike others, he refuses to “leave his pride on the other side.”

Here’s a tribute to Cohen on the KCRW blog with mentions of Gore’s cover of “Coming Back to You.”
